Like Gandalf, I have no memory of places, times, conversations, names, or ideas. Especially ideas! Most of my brilliant ideas happen when the veil of sleep is fully upon me and my last coherent thought is, "I'd better write this down." I can be in the middle of a conversation and forget what I'm talking about. You know that desperate feeling of trying to grasp a word, a single word, and you're snapping your fingers, gesturing wildly with your hands and your audience is losing interest, so you just give up? Difficulty concentrating and memory lapses are common symptoms of menopause. I feel like Alice, down the rabbit hole, living in an illusory world where my brain and my mouth are not connected...
My Daughter: Mom, when will dinner be ready?
Me: When the timer goes off.
Me: (what I actually said) However many long is on the time.
However many long is on the time?
Happens with frightening regularity, like when your waiter says, "enjoy your meal," and you absentmindedly say, "you, too." As a writer, it is impossibly frustrating. What should take twenty minutes to write, now takes half the morning. Maybe I'm just a little out of practice, or maybe it's menopause.
